Open Letter to Mami

Dear Mami,
I hope you doing well in those eastern regions of kenya and more specific South Imenti. I know your shambas are clean in this type of season as far as I know you. I also know you are rebuking our youngest sister once in a while since she is in her holidays. I guess you as well wait every morning to check on your grandson Mark even on behave of papa who is away.

Am doing well here too. Mami I wrote this letter to update you on some things that go through my mind as I walk in the streets after work on my way to the house.

Mami you remember the way you turned down my requests to hung around with my friend on suturdays when I was under ten? And she was just a girl? I now don ask any one permission to meet friends but mami be sure I do them wisely and with a purpose. Mami do you remember how you made us go to sunday school, brigade and youth meetings? Mami I want to let you know now in mid twenties I still don’t struggle doing it.

Mami you remember how you used to carry my books and shopping to school on opening days? Mami I will also do that to my kids. Mami you remember those saturdays how you used to ask me a question that I never answered? “what have you done today?” Mami no one asks me oftenly these days but my conscious always hums it anytime I think am wasting time.

Mami you remember how you pinched us when we retorted back? Now mami I really respect my elders. Mami you remember how you used to send me back anytime I forgot to tell someone thanks? It was really shameful to go back to say thanks but Mami I don’t forget these days. Sometimes I say it severally.

Mami you remember how you used to visit our bedrooms in the midnight to check on us and pinch us incase we uncovered ourselves? Mami these days no one comes to check on me but be sure I don’t uncover myself now. Mami I didn’t tell you that anytime you started with my bro’s bed I would quickly pull my blankents nicely on hearing the slaps raining on my bro’s side. when you checked I know you thought I was fast asleep but I used to pretend. I always wished you start with my bro every night.

Mami you remember that day we went with my friend without your knowledge to collect black fruits and we came late? Haki I knew you won’t spare me that day. Mami these days I don’t just go without letting someone know where have gone. Mami I have alot of memories especially for thirteen years I reported to your house before i went to high school. Thanks alot and be sure you molded a woman in me.

Mami I almost forgot to remind you the way you warned us on ever meeting any of us standing along the village paths with a boy. Mami todate am in mid twenties and i still don’t like it. Mami thanks finally I introduced Peter to you and you didn’t chase me back. Thanks mami you understood age and times though I don’t want to remind you the way you kept probing me about my wedding. Mami there is a funny friend i met in campus called ALexander Maina he reminded me to add this before sending the letter.

Mami say hi to papa and let him know I will be writing to him soon.
